Later, she is found by Kohta and Yuka, two cousins who are reunited after eight years to study at university, and is taken back home with them. After she breaks Kohta’s seashell, his keepsake from his younger sister Kanae who died “of an illness” eight years earlier, she runs away because Kohta gets angry with her. She does not remember anything that she has done in her entire life.

Fuu, a waitress falls in bad situation of being intimidated by the village prefect’s son and his guards, begs the rakish warrior Mugen to help her. Across town, skilled ronin Jin kills the prefect’s bodyguards as they prepare to kill a peasant. Jin enters the restaurant, where Mugen mistakes him for the prefect’s elite bodyguards and seeking a worthy adversary, engages him in combat. One of the prefect’s son guards sets the restaurant on fire and it burns to the ground. The local authorities capture both Mugen and Jin, who were knocked unconscious by coal gas, and sentence them to death. After escaping their execution with some help from Fuu, she asks them to join her on a quest to find a mysterious man who smells of sunflowers.

Sakura, hearing about Nemu’s amnesia, tries desperately to stop the cherry blossom tree, which responds by blooming even more. Nemu wanders away from home in a daze, and Jun’ichi goes looking for her. Jun’ichi found Sakura and is able to get through to her and wither the cherry blossom tree at last. Nemu appears and Jun’ichi is happy to see her. Sakura now only wishes for Jun’ichi and Nemu’s happiness. The Hatsune-Jima sakura trees are now ordinary sakura trees; nevertheless, all the islanders will live normally from now on.

Despite Nemu’s earlier recovery, she is still bedridden, and has resumed coughing cherry blossom petals. Sakura, upon discovering this, realizes that the magic cherry blossom tree had not died, and that she had not truly let go of Jun’ichi. Sakura decides to leave Hatsune-jima, to put distance between herself and Jun’ichi. Mako and Suginami visit Nemu, but they find that Nemu does not remember who they are and becomes anxious.
