“Bogus Booty” “Through and Through / Tettō Tetsubi” (徹頭徹尾)

The shogun’s prettiest ninja ends up giving Mugen an evening that he will never forget. Meanwhile, Fuu gets large from eating too much.

際会 Saikai Confrontation ~ Zufällige Begegnung (lit. Coincidental Meeting)

Nana is released with brand-new artificial limbs and enough money to last her for a while on her own. Kurama, his second-in-command Shirakawa, and his assistant are all reprimanded by Kakuzawa for letting her escape and letting Kohta enter the facility to find Lucy. Meanwhile Nana, not knowing of anything outside the facility, does not know what to do with the money and begins to burn some. Soon, she is found by Mayu at the cemetery where she was almost killed by Lucy and they become friends with each other. Nana is then brought back to Kohta’s home. Discovering that Lucy (actually Nyu) is in the home, Nana attacks her.

“Misguided Miscreants (Part 2)” “Dark Night’s Road 2 / An’ya Kōro sono ni” (暗夜行路 其之弐)

When Mugen finds out what the pirate was planning to do, he gets his revenge.

衷情 Chūjō Innermost Feelings ~ Herzenswärme (lit. Heart Warmth)

Bando escapes from the hospital, still trying to find Lucy to satisfy his grudge against her. Professor Kakuzawa Yū’s decapitated body is found by his assistant and Kohta. While searching for Lucy, Kohta and Yuka develop a fondness for each other as displayed through a kiss. Finally, Lucy is found by Kohta and Yuka and taken back home.

“Misguided Miscreants (Part 1)” “Dark Night’s Road 1 / An’ya Kōro sono ichi” (暗夜行路 其之壱)

Mugen’s past memories lure him back into his violent past; a pirate makes secret plans. And the lust for gold brings betrayal.

落掌 Rakushō Receipt ~ Empfang (lit. Reception)

Mayu’s past and why she ran away from home are revealed. Mayu’s mother remarried, and her new stepfather repeatedly molested her. When her mother refused to offer her any help, she ran away from home, where she encountered a stray dog, whom she named “Wanta”. As Kohta and Yuka enter university and take Nyu with them, Professor Kakuzawa, the son of Kurama’s boss (and, by coincidence, the university lecturer) discovers Nyu and she is taken from Kohta and Yuka. Kakuzawa is revealed to be partly diclonius, and intends to breed with Lucy. However she simply kills him, claiming that he is worthless in the evolution towards a diclonius-populated world. Kohta finds out it is also Mayu’s 14th birthday, and invites her to stay permanently with them, where she finally feels that she has a family who cares for her.

触撃 Shokugeki Attack ~ Aufeinandertreffen (lit. Encounter)

Nana, using the telepathic powers of diclonii to find Lucy, fights her in a local cemetery, and Mayu encounters them in the middle of the battle. Before long, Nana has all her limbs ripped off, nearly dead. Kurama is ordered by his boss, Kakuzawa, to put Nana down, however Kurama does not kill her. Yuka discovers that Mayu is homeless and invites her to stay with them.

“The Disorder Diaries” “Learning from the Past / Onkochishin” (温故知新)

Mugen steals Fuu’s diary that she has been keeping since they first started on their journey to find the sunflower samurai. The episode is a humorous recap on what has happened so far in ‘Samurai Champloo’ as seen through Fuu’s viewpoint, which is in turn criticised by Jin and Mugen. In the end, they find a note written by Fuu herself saying that she knew they would try and snoop into her diary, which enrages Mugen.

胸裡 Kyōri Deep Feelings ~ Im Innersten (lit. At Heart)

Yuka, who has been in love with Kohta since childhood, caught him in several awkward situations with Nyu (such as changing her clothes for her after the last episode because her other clothes are wet), causing her to become increasingly jealous of Kohta’s concern for Nyu. Mayu, a 13 year old girl and her dog Wanta, who witnessed the incidents in episode 2, return an umbrella left by Kohta on the beach to him, where she is interrogated about the events. Meanwhile, Nana, codenamed “No. 7”, another diclonius, is released from her confinement in order to track down Lucy and bring her back to the facility.

“Gamblers and Gallantry” “Fallen Angel / Daraku Tenshi” (堕落天使)

Jin comes to the rescue of a lady in distress. He falls in love and tries to rescue this woman from the hard life she has come to face. Will he save her and himself? In the meantime, Mugen trains a rhinoceros beetle for a bug fighting tournament in which he expects to win money.

掃討 Sōtō Annihilation ~ Vernichtung (lit. Annihilation)

The offshore facility, headed by the scientist Kurama, sends a special task force, headed by the ruthless, cold-hearted assassin Bando, to hunt down Lucy at a beach in Kamakura. However, they only encounter her in her innocent “Nyu” state. She is hit over the head by Bando. Bando then tells his partner to finish Nyu off, but the hit reverts Nyu back to Lucy, who kills Bando’s partner, and goes after Bando. Lucy uses a firearm to shoot and injure Bando. In the end, Bando has been dismembered and blinded. Lucy reverts to Nyu before she is able to kill Bando. It is seen here that Lucy and Nyu switch between each other depending on the events surrounding them. After being injured by Bando, Kohta is put in the hospital, but is not severely injured, and is released hours later while Yuka goes looking for Lucy. He encounters her back at the house and forgives her.

“Lethal Lunacy” “Fighting Fire With Fire / Idoku Seidoku)” (以毒制毒)

Mugen faces the lethal challenge of a Shaolin-trained swordsman and proves equal to the test, while Jin gets stuck doing all the housework. Can Mugen defeat this trained swordsman or will he suffer from his mistakes?

邂逅 Kaikō A Chance Encounter ~ Begegnung (lit. Meeting)

A diclonius named “Lucy” escapes from an experimental laboratory off the coast of Kamakura, which is being used as a facility to hold diclonius and use them for experiments. After killing many guards, she is shot in the head and falls into the sea; her brain damage causes her to form an innocent, somewhat infantile split personality, “Nyu”. Later, she is found by Kohta and Yuka, two cousins who are reunited after eight years to study at university, and is taken back home with them. After she breaks Kohta’s seashell, his keepsake from his younger sister Kanae who died “of an illness” eight years earlier, she runs away because Kohta gets angry with her. She does not remember anything that she has done in her entire life.

“Beatbox Bandits” “Evil Spirits of Mountain and Stream / Chimimōryō” (魑魅魍魎)

Mugen, Jin, and Fuu need to cross a border so they purchase travel passes since they don’t have any. When their passes turn out to be fake, the trio are sentenced to death. However, when the guards offer Mugen a chance to save his friends; if he can deliver an object through a forest full of bandits and return in time, Jin and Fuu will be spared.

“The Art of Altercation” “Self-Conceit / Yuigadokuson” (唯我独尊)

A singing swordsman hunts for Jin has been challenging any samurai wearing glasses he can find, accompanied by a beat-boxing duo of thugs. The question arises as to whether or not he will recognize Jin when he becomes infatuated with Fuu, for Jin has had to pawn his glasses.

“A Risky Racket” “Surrounded on all Sides / Shimensoka” (四面楚歌)

While Fuu, Jin, and Mugen are going to get some soup, Fuu’s purse is stolen by a thief in the town.

“Stranger Searching” “Redheaded Foreigner / Akage Ijin” (赤毛異人)

The trio enters into an eating competition with Mugen and Jin’s swords on the line. After a mysterious man wins the eating competition, they must find a way to get their swords back and save the mysterious man. Will they succeed?

“Artistic Anarchy” “Utter Indifference / Bajitōfū” (馬耳東風)

Fuu is targeted as a kidnapper group’s next victim. Will the others be able to save her in time?

“Hellhounds for Hire (Part 2)” “Tacit Understanding 2 / Ishindenshin sono ni” (以心伝心 其之弐)

A dice rolling contest will decide the fate of the gang warfare. Who will end up dying as a result?

Mugen and Jin, annoyed with Fuu’s demands, disband the group at a fork in the road, each taking separate paths, unknowingly joining the ranks of two gangs involved in a conflict. Fuu is captured by yakuza and turned into a harlot and dice dealer, supervising the dice game between Mugen and Jin that ultimately reminds them of their promise and duty.
